Τhe main concept of our project with the purpose, aims and general information has been uploaded onto the central website of the Agricultural University of Athens

    Environmental problem

Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is an endemic species that infects oak forests in Central and Southern Europe, Asia and Africa. It creates a major environmental problem as it can destroy entire trees and cause health problems in humans and animals (eg allergies, skin diseases).

The aim of the research project is to use “smart” traps and pheromones to monitor and control the insect in Greece, Spain and Slovenia, where applications with insecticides are not always possible.

    Aims of the program

Design and development of innovative recyclable traps.
Continuous monitoring of infestation levels using “smart” traps.
Minimize levels of infection in different target areas.
Reduction of application costs compared to the use of insecticides.
Reduction of the nuisance resulting from the larva.
Improving the design and efficiency of pheromone traps.
Evaluation of the effectiveness of the methods of inhibition of the coupling of the two sexes.
Positive effect on the conservation of local biodiversity.
Transfer of knowledge to forest protection bodies, municipal authorities and local bodies.
